On February 24, 2022, all European media outlets echoed Russia's initial
attacks on Ukraine and did not hesitate to label it an invasion, following days of receiving
information about escalating tensions in the region. The primary objective of this study is
to investigate the news coverage provided by El País and El Mundo concerning the
conflict between Russia and Ukraine during the early months of the crisis. To achieve this,
a quantitative content analysis is conducted, examining the secondary themes present in
the news articles published by these media outlets, the audiovisual resources included,
and the structure of sources in their publications. A total of 303 news articles were
analyzed. The analysis's findings suggest that the most frequent secondary themes are
related to the economy and international politics. Photographs and videos are the most
commonly used audiovisual resources, and there is a predominant reliance on official sources. In addition, this research includes a qualitative analysis of the lexical choices in
the discourse presented to readers by El País and El Mundo. The results indicate that both
media outlets employ a military or war-related lexicon in their reporting, despite opposing
the conflict. Discursively, El País strongly opposes Putin's regime, while El Mundo
dedicates some of its news coverage to presenting a more favorable image of the
governor. [-]
