Biblioteca Virtual en Salud (BVS), Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health

Introduction: Human papillomavirus is the most common sexually transmitted agent
worldwide and has been shown to cause different types of cancer, it is also noteworthy
that the incidence of oral and oropharyngeal infection by this virus is increasing along
with new risk behaviors acquired by new generations, thus generating the debate on
the influence of human papillomavirus vaccine against oropharyngeal and oral
infection.
Objective: To determine whether the use of HPV vaccines decreases the incidence of
oropharyngeal and oral HPV infection.
Methodology: Systematic review conducted in Pubmed, Cochrane Library, Virtual
Health Library (VHL), Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature
(CINAHL) and ProQuest using different descriptors, filters and inclusion and
exclusion criteria.
Results: A total of N=6 articles were selected and studied according to different
variables: database, year of publication, type of study, country of publication,
language, type of vaccine, sex of the sample, sexual behavior, and efficacy and
effectiveness against infection and cancer development, respectively.
Conclusions: The evidence suggests that the impact of human papillomavirus
vaccines against the prevalence and incidence of oral infections is variable and
depends on several factors. It can be said that HPV vaccination is an important tool for
the prevention of HPV infections, but more research is needed to relate its influence
against oropharyngeal and oral cancer. [-]
