De los dibujos animados al cine de animación: Claves para la adultización de la animación occidental

Abstract

Con la reivindicación de que ‘la animación es un medio, no un género’, los profesionales y aficionados de este tipo de formatos, defienden que su sistema de representación no la desvincula precisamente de ser un medio, un medio que, como cualquier otro, proporciona las herramientas para contar historias de todo tipo. El propósito fundamental de este trabajo es el de analizar la evolución de la animación y cómo ha pasado de ser considerada algo casi exclusivamente infantil, a utilizarse progresivamente para contar historias con contenidos y temáticas mucho más maduros. Para comprender este fenómeno se abordan, desde un enfoque expositivo y reflexivo, cuestiones concretas como las características propias del medio, sus principales tipos de público o la forma en que se consume. Partiendo de los orígenes y su evolución histórica, se hace especial hincapié en las particularidades de la animación o cómo se utiliza y entrelaza con otros medios. Además, para entender cómo la situación actual del medio y el contexto en el que participa han ayudado a cambiar la visión hegemónica de la animación, se describen y analizan las principales circunstancias sociales, culturales o tecnológicas implicadas en el denominado como "proceso de adultización".

Claiming that 'animation is a medium, not a genre', professionals and enthusiasts of this type of format defend that its representation system does not disassociate it from being a medium, a medium that, like any other, provides the tools to tell stories of all types. The main purpose of this paper is to analyze the evolution of animation and how it has gone from being considered something almost exclusively for children to being used progressively to tell stories with much more mature contents and themes. In order to understand this phenomenon, specific issues such as the characteristics of the medium, its main types of audience or the way in which it is consumed, are addressed from an expository and reflexive approach. Starting from the origins and its historical evolution, special emphasis is placed on the particularities of animation or how it is used and intertwined with other media. Furthermore, to understand how the current situation of the medium and the context in which it participates have helped to change the hegemonic vision of animation, the main social, cultural or technological circumstances involved in the so-called "adultization process" are described and analyzed.
