Photocatalytic oxidation processes have been considered to be one of the promising methods applied for
leachate from landfills. Azo dyes that contain the -N = N- group are widely used as colorants in the textile,
paper, food industry, etc. (Congo Red, Methylene Blue, Orange II ...) and are compounds resistant to
conventional treatment, being photocatalysis an alternative to its efficient treatment in the waste
leachate. In this communication, the photocatalytic activity of composites of formal composition
Sr4Mn2CuO4 and with cerium partially substituting Mn (Sr4MnCeCuO4) as well as materials calcined at
12h with distorted hexagonal perovskite structure are evaluated. The composites were obtained
by methods of metal-organic decomposition (MOD) or aqueous citrate route as well as Sol-Gel based on
the hydrolysis-condensation of alcoholic soluti C are deep black
in color with a glassy appearance and have a high photodegradation capacity over Orange II, with half-life
values similar to the reference anatase (Degussa P25). In the case of samples fired at 12h, the
half-life times are 10 times higher. Although the photocatalytic activity is biocidal, it is desirable to
combine different but complementary bactericidal methods (such as Cu2 + ions in this case: in 1852 Victor Burq discovered that people who worked with copper had far fewer deaths from cholera than anyone
else, later studies confirm its bactericidal activity). [-]
