The prolific composer Mikis Theodorakis (Chios, 1925) has been able to create his own musical language, unmistakably Greek —that is to say «popular»— and cult at the same time, setting to music the greatest contemporary poets. The fusion of Greek poetry with a very personal language, which picked up a long musical tradition, begins with the selection of Επιτάφιος (Epitaphios) by Iannis Ritsos and will continue with other great poets such as Seferis, Elytis and Gatsos among others.
