En la actualidad se han extendido las visiones críticas de la meritocracia al punto de que esta ha venido a identificarse, tanto en el ámbito académico como en el de los medios de comunicación, con una suerte de retórica insolidaria por parte de aquellos privilegiados que enarbolan la idea de mérito individual para eludir obligaciones morales y jurídicas relacionadas con la igualdad. Dos ejemplos de esta corriente son La tiranía del mérito del filósofo norteamericano Michael Sandel, y en nuestro país, el reciente ensayo de César Rendueles Contra la igualdad de oportunidades. Este artículo trata de situar tales críticas en el campo de las percepciones de la meritocracia relativas a una determinada “arrogancia” como cuestión de “estilo” rebatiendo el fondo de esas visiones críticas del mérito. Al mismo tiempo, se apuntan algunas medidas para resolver la tensión que se produce entre los principios de mérito e igualdad. [-]

At present, the critical views of meritocracy have spread to the point that it has come to identify itself
both in the academic sphere and in the media with the expression of a kind of unsupportive rhetoric on the part of
those privileged people who carry it out the idea of individual merit to avoid moral and legal obligations related
to equality. Two examples of this trend are The Tyranny of Merit according to Michael Sandel, and in Spain, the
recent essay by César Rendueles Against Equal Opportunities. This article tries to place such criticisms in the
narrow field of the meritocracy’s perceptions regarding a certain “arrogance” as a matter of “style”, refuting the
substance of these critical views of merit. At the same time, some measures are pointed out to resolve the tension
between the principles of merit and equality. [-]
