After wide evidence of government quality effects in the economic performance at national, and recently at the regional levels, analyzes at the municipal level count with few examples due to severe data limitations. This paper reviews the corruption indicators used in the literature with different purposes and develops a data mining model able to identify municipal corruption cases from a Spanish judicial data base. Our model identified 773 municipal corruption cases prosecuted in Spain during the period 2000-2020, and after validation tests, we found an accuracy of 92% in the data extraction and significant correlations between the number of cases and the European Quality of Government Index (EQI) at the NUTS-2 level. Nevertheless, the application of this data for further analyzes is still limited by a lack of statistics with municipal detail. [-]
