Special Minds is a digital communication medium which promotes the visibility of
people with intellectual disabilities and the support to the group, to their families and
friends. It is structured in the following way: first, the reasons for the accomplishment
of Special Minds, the interest, the relevance, the main objectives and the audience
are indicated. Later the analysis of the competence, design and corporate identity,
structure of the medium, platforms and social networks used are explained. Next, the
focus of the parts and the sources used are discussed. Finally, the conclusions and
personal assessment are addressed.
In relation to the name of the publication, it makes reference to their minds as they
are people with intellectual disabilities. And on the other hand, the use of the
adjective "special" is due to the fact that their brains are amazing and original. A
group with special, beautiful and admirable minds that have the possibility of
succeeding in any field like other people without disabilities.
The main objectives that are intended to be achieved through the publication of the
cybermedia are to make the group visible in different areas, facilitate their labor
insertion as well as provide them with a voice. In addition it aims to bring people with
special needs closer to the public to avoid discrimination, provide a correct and
precise language to address them and inform about the centres and residences as
well as making known the characteristics of these people through the team of
specialised professionals.
Regarding the target audience, they are people with intellectual disabilities and
mental illnesses, family members as well as people who are interested in learning
about this group to facilitate, as far as possible, their socio-labor inclusion in our
society.
The media do not usually deal in depth with issues of the group of people with
intellectual disabilities and sometimes the language which they use can be offensive
and difficult for them to understand. Thus Special Minds was born to bring
information to people with intellectual disabilities in the province, specifically, to the
citizens of the province of Castellón, using social networks as the main
dissemination tool.
It aims to take advantage of all the advantages that the network offers and to
differentiate itself from the competition in terms of themes, style and peculiarity to
address its readers.
As for the colours, they have been chosen according to what they reflect. Turquoise
blue transmits the emotions of confidence, seriousness and understanding, and
white symbolises peace. A customised logo has also been developed to identify the
cybermedia. It has a brain and some butterflies. The brain represents the minds of
people with intellectual disabilities and the butterflies represent changes,
transformations and the evolution towards something positive.
Thus the corporate identity seeks to make Internet users associate this logo and
these colours to an informative body with values and with the objective of making
known the positive aspects and capacities of people with intellectual and mental
disabilities.
Regarding to the cybermedia, it is divided into 6 different sections which are Current,
Speaker,Guide, Gallery, Dictionary and Who am I?. Current affairs is where the most
relevant news are shared, Speaker is where the protagonists express their feelings,
Guide which is a section of interviews, Gallery where their day-to-day life is shown,
Dictionary which is a space dedicated to specific terms and language to expand
verbal knowledge and the last one which is called Who am I? which deals with the
personal biography of the creator of the medium, the motivations, concerns and
needs for which this digital medium was born.
In relation to the platform used to develop the website, Wix has been chosen
because it is an easy application to use and it allows people to design according to
their tastes and preferences. The Special Minds website is designed in a
personalised way and with the option of a free account. The post of videos, images
and podcasts makes Special Minds a multimedia page which is essential in a digital
communication medium and necessary to make the content more dynamic, bearable
and eye-catching. On the other hand, hypertextuality also predominates, since
through the publication some links are offered that lead to other websites, which are
related to the subject and they may be of interest to the Internet user.
Social networks are essential for the website. They serve to promote interactivity and
make the content of the web visible. Therefore, Instagram and Twitter have been
selected. Both platforms consist of an infinity of tools for the dissemination of the
pieces and allow reaching the maximum audience possible due to their popularity.
The platform on which I focus during the trajectory of publications of the webpage is
Instagram as it has a visual and attractive way for users to access the content of the
website. The network has 200 followers, with a total of 27 posts, which have worked
well. Thanks to this platform, one of the objectives has been accomplished which
was to reach a younger audience. The application allows the use of publications and
stories. Twitter has also been selected although it has not reached a large number of
followers. It is an instant network, where most of the users are adult people, which
has allowed to promote the most relevant contents in a brief way with clear and
attractive language, images and hashtags.
If this post were real, an approximation of the total money that will be invested has
been developed. On the other hand, the entities that have participated would have
the option of collaborating with the digital medium and since it is a social issue,
public aid would be sought.
Current news predominate in the media. Some of them are campaigns carried out by
entities to claim the lack of opportunities and socialisation of the group or to make
visible various positive aspects of them. Others are new services such as a
television programme with simple language, where the collaborators themselves are
people with intellectual disabilities.
On the other hand, some agreements of different town councils in the province of
Castellón are found, which facilitate the realisation of various resources and
necessary activities in specialised centres, as well as a project on remodelling of
monuments in a municipality promoted by a council, where the users of an
occupational centre work.
The interviews carried out are, on the one hand, with experts from the sector to learn
about activities that improve the quality of life of the group and advice based on real
experiences, and on the other hand, interviews with relatives and people with
intellectual disabilities to tell their own experiences and daily events.
Regarding the audiovisual and written report, the topics are similar, where the
objective is to give visibility to people with intellectual disabilities in the workplace.
On the other hand, the radio report is based on the different occupational centres for
people with intellectual disabilities in the province of Castellón in order to know in
depth this specialised service, its objectives, advantages and main functions.
In relation to the photographic galleries, some of them deal with tasks and activities
that users carry out in a residence, in which they try to transmit their emotions,
experiences and links with professionals through images.
It should be noted that the publications of the dictionary section do not count as
journalistic pieces because it is complementary information of service for users,
where different experts have collaborated.
To finish, regarding my personal assessment, it must be said that the preparation of
the Final Degree Project (TFG) is convenient and useful because it allows you to put
into practice all the knowledge and skills acquired within the career, specifically the
writing of journalistic genres.
So, I decided to choose the specialised cybermedia line because it was one of the
most complex but at the same time the most effective tool to put skills into practice.
At an academic level, the greatest difficulty has been the creation of the website
because we do not have enough knowledge in this area. And on a practical level, as
it is a sensitive subject, you have various limitations such as the authorisations
required for taking photographs and the inclusive language in the content and the
consent of the entities regarding the data and publications.
On the other hand, this project has helped me to get to know specialised journalism
first-hand, since when dealing with people with intellectual disabilities, you obtain
technical language, in-depth knowledge of the subject and an agenda of expert
sources in this field.
From my point of view, I have learned a lot in the digital publishing process both as a
person and as a journalist, because it has taught me to plan and streamline content
writing and has allowed me to communicate first-hand with the collective.
During the process I have enjoyed with professionals, close friends and, especially,
with people with mental functional diversity. In short, the experience has been very
rewarding and my desire is to maintain the website. [-]
