The existence of free radicals in living cells was discovered in 1954, and since then there are a
large amount of studies that have confirmed that the prolonged and/or high intensity exercise
induces detectable alterations of the redox state, at least in the blood. Due to the recent
popularity of ultramarathons during the last decade, the aim of this study is to assess if the
realization of the CSP ultramarathon influences in the redox state of the runner’s serum. For this
purpose, antioxidants such as glutathione peroxidase and an oxidative damage marker (carbonyl
groups) will be evaluated before and after the race. In addition, its possible association with
muscle damage will be assess through the study of two markers, LDH and CK. This is a
programmed, observational and retrospective study with a sample size of 32 runners. The
results obtained in this work suggest a significant increase in the marker of oxidative damage to
proteins at the finish line and at 24 hours of the race compared to the basal levels of carbonyl
groups. This significance also occurs in both markers of muscle damage but not in the case of
GPx activity. In addition, there appears to be a significant correlation between increased GPx
activity and increased LDH between baseline and target levels. This study allows us to confirm
the involvement of the plasma oxidative state in the processes of muscle damage that take place
in ultra-marathon runners. [-]
