The work focuses on Modernist painting and its relationship with the nationalisms of
the late nineteenth century. Our objective is to check whether modernist painting had
any influence on the social movements of cultural vindication and on the nationalisms
that began to define themselves as political parties in the last years of the 19th century.
For this reason, we take as an example four painters who became symbols of modernist
painting in their cities. We also pretend to find out the relationship between politics and
culture as the essence of a society or, in the words of Hegel, the spirit of an era, is the
subject at hand.
The artists chosen for our study are: Gustav Klimt in the city of Vienna, Alfons Mucha
in Prague and Ramón Casas i Carbó in Barcelona together with the painter and writer
Santiago Rusiñol.
Modernist painting developed in the historical context prior to the disintegration of the
Austro-Hungarian Empire, Vienna and Prague are examples of the different tendencies
of the end-of-century nationalism. In southern Europe, Catalonia is experiencing
industrialization and, as a consequence, anarchist movements together with other
laborers' rights movements. Meanwhile, Catalan language is regaining prestige because
the Renaixença was rising as a movement for cultural and political regeneration. [-]
