One of the most challenging tasks organizational leaders can face is changing organizational culture, as the organizational culture – already very abstract as a concept – is basically social interactions and organizational members’ beliefs created collective experience that affects not only every member of the organization but also every aspect of that organization. Therefore, understanding organizational culture and organizational change is crucial for organizational leadership and management.
In this study we will define first the main concepts of organizational culture and climate, people-centred organizational culture, organizational change and Agile philosophy in organizational culture. Additionally to this theoretical framework, we will conduct a case study about CERN (the European Organization for Nuclear Research) and the recent reorganization and consequent cultural change in one of its departments. The case study comprises a theoretical overview of CERN, an analysis of employee satisfaction surveys and cultural workshops as well as the author’s personal experience as an administrative student trainee in CERN. With this case study, we want to understand better the process of organizational culture change in an organization that has been through a recent structural change. [-]
