The emergence of the Internet, social networks and virtual platforms has
fostered quick and ef ective communication between a large number of
people from all over the world. However, the Internet does not only allow for
communication understood as interaction; it can also be used to provide
focused views, information, and opinions about a topic. This is the reason
why blogs emerged as an important platform to inform, to discuss dif erent
topics, and to provide and exchange opinions.
The language used on the Internet has been deeply analyzed from dif erent
perspectives in the last decades by many scholars such as Crystal (2001),
Baron (2008) and Tagliamonte and Denis (2008) among others. In the
specific case of this study, its aim is to compare and contrast the language
used by males and females in travel blogs by identifying and describing
linguistic features (if any) that may make a dif erence between gender.
Studies such as this one could thus humbly contribute to both genre and
gender-related research.
A corpus-based approach has been adopted to analyse 25 posts from 5 travel
blogs written by women and 25 posts from 5 travel blogs written by men. The
analysis has been focused on four linguistic variables that are relevant in
other gender studies: adverbs, adjectives, modal verbs, and pronouns.
Although some studies such as those of Lakof (1975) show relevant
dif erences between language used by men and women, the current study
contrasts with her results and share findings with more recent studies such
as Baalen (2001), indicating that language is not dif erent between genders probably because of the very same evolution of society towards gender
equalit. [-]
