Old age is characterized by experiencing changes at the cognitive, physical, social and psychological levels.
Certain psychological constructs can soften the negative connotations that are perceived about the changes, and
self-esteem is one of them.Due to the scarcity of programs aimed at increasing self-esteem in institutionalized
elderly people, the objective of this study is to design a program to improve the self-esteem of institutionalized
elderly people, and to analyze which type of intervention (individual or group) is more effective, and if gender
influences such improvement. For this, 14 residents with GDS 2 on the Reisberg Scale participated. Of these, half
were randomly assigned to the individual intervention group, and the other half to the group intervention group.
Prior to any intervention, the Rosenberg Scale was administered as a pretest, and after the participation in the
design and after one week, the Rosenberg Scale (post-test) was administered again. After data collection, a series
of statistical analyses were performed for non-parametric tests such as Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney U through
SPSS IBM 25.The results obtained showed that both groups increased direct scores on self-esteem after
participating in the program. Furthermore, despite the fact that the results of the individual group were more
positive, there were no significant differences in terms of the methodology used, nor between the gender.
Therefore, it is concluded that although the individual intervention turned out to be more positive, perhaps due to
the therapeutic link and the individualized treatment, it would be more beneficial to work in a group way to be able
to cover more residents, due to the improvement did not turn out to be significant. Finally, after the results obtained,
it is recommended to carry out this type of intervention in the elderly people care centers. [-]
