The present project tries to give visibility to the situation of helplessness that the
subjects who suffer some type of mental pathology live within the penitentiary centers of
ordinary nature, place that is not the most indicated so that they comply with their security
measure of internment. However, the overcrowding that exists in prison psychiatric
centers does not allow all these individuals to comply with their measure in these
establishments, which can be detrimental to their mental health.
In order to try to harm as little as posible those who suffer from a mental illness, we
find security measures, among which the internment in a psychiatric center stands out,
while there are also different prison establishments to accommodate the different types
of individuals who commit a crime.
One of the problems that usually manifests itself in this group is the late detection of
a mental illness, or that psychiatric symptoms appear once the individual is serving a
sentence, which is known as supervening dementia and its regulation is found in the
article 60 of the Penal Code.
In Spain, the situation of criminals who present a mental pathology is aggravated
since there are only two existing psychiatric penitentiary centers, which are also
overcrowded. In order to give the best possible assistance to those individuals with
health problems, treatment programs such as the PAIEM program have been created,
within which the most common mental disorders are found among the prison population,
together with the Social Mediation Bridge program, with which is to facilitate, as far as
possible, the social reintegration of this group. [-]
