Black feminism in the US has opened a gap within the feminist movement to make way
for new decolonial, inclusive and fully intersectional feminisms led by racialized
women.
The arrival at this vanguard point in the fight for the civil and fundamental rights of all
women has been forged for years from the time of slavery to date by African American
women. The arts, particularly literature, have been an essential part of the evolution of
this movement by transmitting anti-racist feminist thought globally.
Zora Neale Hurston is one of the African-American writers who opened the way to a
type of literature on the search for the identity of black women until reaching their own
character, promulgating the autonomy and freedom of women and striving for the
sincere reflection of the life of the black population without romanticizing it or with
taboos.
Despite not having been recognized until after her death, Hurston is finally considered
one of the great writers of American literature and as an influence of later writers and
currents.
This dissertation is an attempt to explore, from different feminist perspectives, the
search for the feminine identity of a black woman, Janie Crawford, the main character
of Zora Neale Hurston in Sus ojos miraban a Dios. Her experience in the
aforementioned novel to achieve her goal has a number of controversial complexities.
However, to get out of her passivity and search for her own voice, and therefore her
identity, Janie has to make a long journey throughout her marriages and against the
patriarchy that exists within her society.
For this, descriptive, analytical and interpretive research methods have been used. As
for the findings, they limit themselves to Janie's confrontation with her obstructions to
feel in possession of her own identity and a freedom that does not depend on the ties
of her socialization as a black woman.
The goal is to complete the existing interpretations of Hurston's work and to be a useful
means for possible further research on the experience of black women, especially in
the works of African-American writers and subjects like Hurston's. [-]
