At the beginning of the 1970’s the art critic Vicente Aguilera Cerni conceived the idea of creating a Contemporary Art Museum in the historical center of Vilafamés, which was at that time practically in ruins. With the support of the mayor, Vicente Benet, he convinced the provincial government of Castellón to buy the Palace of Batlle, a building from the 17th century, where the museum was installed. At the same time many artists and friends bought houses there and started (despite some difficulties) restoring them. A whole ensemble of streets and spaces full of great charm began to recover, thus avoiding the degradation and destruction of an enclave of great beauty.
A decree on the 22nd of April of 2005 by the government of the Generalitat Valenciana declared the historical center of Vilafamés a site of cultural interest (BIC) in the category of a historical set. Today we face the challenge of making a complete recovery according to modern criteria for a more premeditated rehabilitation, reconciling the landscape and urban area with an ideal residential and cultural activity.
