Dual Pathology is the term used to refer to the concurrence of a drug abuse
disorder and another disorder on the same individual, meaning rather that both disorders
may occur simultaneously or sequentially, along the individual's lifespan. This
relationship necessarily implies that there is an actual interaction within both, that might
show common brain traits.
Currently, several brain structures have been found apparently forming a brain
path that is engaged both in addiction disorders as well as in others that would set the
neurocognitive phenotypes of compulsion and impulsivity involved in these disorders.
These structures would be the ventral tegmental area, some striatum areas, prefrontal
cortex, amygdala, the hippocampus. Recently, the cerebellum is being included.
These prefrontal - cerebellum physio pathology endophenotypes - reflect an underlying
vulnerability, both for disorders in which these are key symptoms (ADHD, personality
disorders), as well as for others in which these are not (depression, schizophrenia or
anxiety). [-]

esquizofrenia o ansiedad). [-]
