The following paper proposes that feminism should be combined with anti-patriarchal activism and
abandon essentialist, monolithical positions. On the one hand, a new reading of Lord of the Flies (1954)
is used to argue that the texts with all-male character casts should be read as examinations of the contrast
between patriarchal masculinity and other alternative models, and not as portraits of general human
nature. The debates elicited by the projects that rewrite this story using exclusively girls demand that we
rethink patriarchy as a construct also appealing to women and opposed by many men. Among them we
fnd Ziauddin Yousafzai, an activist and defender of women’s right to education. His memoirs Let Her Fly: A Father’s Journey and the Fight for Equality (2018) are read here as an example and model of male
anti-patriarchal self-re-education. [-]
