The aim of this study is to provide a thorough analysis of Lady Macbeth’s
transgressive and disruptive features in several readings of this character in
different periods of time. Starting from Jacobean England, moving to 19th century
Russia, and returning to Victorian England. Therefore, the focus will be not only on
the reader’s panoramic view, but also on specific ones regarding some authors such
as William Shakespeare, Nikolai Leskov, and William Oldroyd. Attention will be
paid to different genres (drama, narrative, and the cinema) and interpretations of
the same character: Lady Macbeth.
An exhaustive examination of the impact of her behaviour will be carried out by
discussing her chameleonic features to adapt to different periods of time and
cultures, as well as her metamorphosis as a female character regarding the
traditional dichotomy about her sexual attributes. A discussion of her main features
such as ambition, violence, love and madness will be carried out by analysing the
importance of social norms, the female role and religion. Thus, it will be highlighted
the appropriateness of feminine behaviour according to social norms given to
women in the different countries analysed. Although the mould of societal norms
differs considerably, Lady Macbeth still breaks it in each different case. Hence, she
is worthy of a deep and thorough analysis. For this reason, it is of interest to discuss
and compare one of Shakespeare’s most famous female characters, with Katerina in
Leskov’s Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District , a novella, and Katherine in
Oldroyd’s film adaptation Lady Macbeth . [-]
