The process that we all know as the Cold War, which begins after the end of World War
II, also breaks out in Latin America. Guatemala represented the first Cold War problem
in the hemisphere. On October 20, 1944, there was a movement in Guatemala, known
as the "1944 revolution," which meant the beginning of a decade-long transformation
that ended the Ubico regime. Arévalo came to power after democratic elections and carried out a revolutionary process that will affect the education and health parcels,
developed the worker's code and drafted a new Constitution, all supported by his
ideology of spiritual socialism. In 1950, Colonel Jacobo Arbenz arrived at the
government, a key figure in the October Revolution of 1944, whose main mission was
the capitalist economic growth of the country. It was his wife, Maria, who brought him
closer to the socialist and communist texts. The key piece of his administration was the
agrarian reform, called Decree 900. Very soon the agrarian reform collided with the
interests of United Fruit and the United States. In response to what was happening, the
Eisenhower government pointed out that Guatemala was moving towards communism.
In the summer of 1952, Truman authorized the illegal arming of the Guatemalan
opponents of Arbenz and at dawn on June 17, 1954, the action began with a plan of
comprehensive intervention included in a new conception of North American foreign
policy. The first result of this plan was the PBSUCCESS. Arbenz had no choice but to
resign from the presidency on June 27. The overthrow of Arbenz meant the end of the
October 1944 revolution. [-]
