DSM-5 defines the autism spectrum disorder (ASD) like a mental disorder of
neurodevelopmental type. This disorder it’s characterized by the presence of restrictive
and repetitive behaviors and deficits in social interaction and communication.
The switch from DSM-IV-TR to DSM-5 modified the diagnostic organization dividing the
concept of autism in three different types (level I, II and III).
The most common treatments used previously to DSM-5 are the behavioral intervention
and the pharmacological ones. As well as the use of specific methodologies such as
TEACCH and PECS. In addition, evolutionary programs for early assistance are present
too.
The aim of this review is to reflect whether the changes in the diagnosis (DSM-IV-TR to
DSM-5) affected the use of these types of ASD intervention.
The method consisted of reviewing the type of intervention in the treatment of children and
adolescents with autism in different databases such as Google Scholar and Psycinfo about
the types of treatment used between 2013 and 2018. The keywords used were autism,
intervention and treatment.
Initially, 50 articles were selected, which were subsequently reduced to 11, due to
methodological limitations (absence control group).
The results show that no differences were registered when comparing the intervention
proposals before and after 2013, and so the treatment is similar than before one.
The reason of this could be the little time elapsed between the two versions of DSM or in
that the differences are not very relevant.
Articles related to the mind-body and animal therapies were found, but they were not
considered because of limitations. Another restriction is that it is not focused on autism
nuclear treatment.
In the light of the last reflections, it has been observed that methodological difficulties in the
empirical investigation of the autism still exist. [-]
