| ca_CA |
dc.description.abstract | After the invention of modern cinema, a remaining melancholic conection has been mantained with Hollywood’s classicism, which, after the flourishing of the French New Wave, has led to a two-way flow of ideas and trends that unite French cinema and contemporary American independent cinema. This bond translates into formal cinematographic and narrative elements that are repeated throughout history, generating intertexts between films from both eras. Greta Gerwig, an independent film director, inherits the influence of François Truffaut’s work and specifically of The 400 Blows (Les quatre-cents coups; 1959) in her most recent piece Lady Bird (2017). The narrative construction of Gerwig’s debut feature main character, Lady Bird, stems from the iconic character Antoine Doinel, and this research explores the textual imprints that allow this connection between the two character to exist. The method used in this research is based on the analysis of the films The 400 Blows and Lady Bird, with the previous revision of theoretical documents corresponding to the movements of the French New Wave and American independent cinema from the 1960s to our current cinema. It also includes other references to contemporary films that exemplify the influence that they receive from modern cinema. This analysis confirms the hypothesis that proves how contemporary independent cinema continues to look back at Truffaut’s work on an overseas journey that personifies Antoine Doinel’s ghost as Greta Gerwig’s character, Lady Bird. | ca_CA |
