Introduction: The term “acquired brain damage” (ABD) refers to a brain injury that can be
traumatic origin (traffic accidents, blows...) or non-traumatic (cerebrovascular accidents, brain
tumors...). (Tirapu Ustarroz, Rios Lago, & Maestu Unturbe, 2011). There is a high prevalence of
woring memory impairments following acquired brain damage (Carroll et al., 2004; Cumming et
al., 2013). Even so, the cognitive function may be modified through targeted interventions and
improve in rehabilitation. (Whyte, Skidmore, Aizenstein, Ricker, & Butters, 2011).
Objective: The main objective of this study was to improve the working memory and the
processing speed in patients with ABD through an adapted and intensive N-back training.
Method: The participants were three ABD patients from the association Ateneo from Castellón. All
participants were briefly assessed with the following tests: Symbol Digit Modalities Test (SDMT)
and the subtests of Digit Span Fordward, Digit Span Bakward and Letters and Numbers of the
battery Wechler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS). The SDMT assess the attention and information
processing speed and the WAIS subtests measure attention and WM. For the training of the WM,
the N-Back task consisted of 4 sessions of 30 minutes each where the patients trained the 2-Back
and 3-Back.
Results: After the training session, patients showed a slight improvement in correct responses and in
reaction time (processing speed) during the execution of the 2 back. This improvement is translated
into an enhancement in the neuropsychological tests that measure processing speed (SDMT) and
MT (direct and inverse digits and letters and numbers).
Conclusion: The level 2-Back can improve working memory in patients with ABD after a prolonged
and intensive training with the task. [-]
