During the past years, numerous studies on lie detection have emerged. It has been proved among professionals in this
field that a tendency exists focusing more on the nonverbal signs than on the verbal ones. In 1981, Zuckerman, De Paulo
and Rosenthal showed that lying requires the use of more cognitive resources than to tell the truth. This discovery is
considered to be the start of cognitive approach which centres on adding cognitive load during the interrogation of
participants resulting in a more verbal and nonverbal signs associated with deceit.
The aim of this review is to get to know the techniques concerning cognitive approach which has shown to have major
empirical validity, With this aim, a systematic search of scientific literatura was carried out which has resulted in a total of 11
articles. The results show a total of 8 cognitives techniques grouped in two types: a) to increase the difficulty of the task
and b) to carry out unexpected questions concerning central aspects. The empirical evidence shows that a series of signs
exist in common with all these cognitive techniques which are the following: the lack of overlap in the replies, a difference
between expected and unexpected questions and the lack of plausibility. These signs make the task of the professionals
easier when they have to distinguish between the deceit or truth. Furthermore, they are a great advantage in the respect of
other alternative focuses which continue being in use nowadays, since the percentage of exactness is higher on the
cognitive focus. In conclusion the cognitive load obligation is associated with the process of the deceit. However, it will be
necessary for future investigation to increase the ecological validity of techniques leading to its detection in real situations. [-]
