Carta abierta a Europa

Abstract

Si bien todas las elecciones son importantes, las muy próximas al Parlamento Europeo lo son especialmente, tanto por el momento –en España y en Europa– en que tienen lugar, como por la influencia que esta Cámara proyecta sobre nuestra vida cotidiana. Es esta, por ello, una buena coyuntura para reflexionar sobre nuestro proyecto de Unión, desterrando el maniqueísmo que o bien erige a Bruselas como materialización de todos los ideales, o bien encarna en Bruselas todos los males que atenazan a los europeos. En un mundo en mutación en el que tras la crisis es utópico soñar con volver al ayer, los europeos podemos y debemos sustentar una mirada crítica y realista, a la par que confiada en nuestro futuro común. Sin perder de vista que Europa cuenta –y contará– unida, mientras que, de no ser así, la totalidad de las naciones que la integran desaparecerán de la primera línea de los actores globales. El nuevo mundo está ahí y mirarlo de frente ayudará a reforzar nuestra compleja identidad.

While all elections are important, the forthcoming elections to the European Parliament are particularly relevant, due both to the time—in Spain and in Europe—when they take place and to the influence extended by this Chamber to our daily life. These are therefore good times to reflect on our Union project, banishing the Manichaeistic view which either regards Brussels as the materialisation of all the ideals or embodies in Brussels all the evils which beset Europeans. In a changing world where, after the crisis, dreaming about going back to the past is unrealistic, Europeans can and must look into our common future with a critical and realistic, and at the same time confident, eye. Without forgetting that Europe only counts—and will only count—if it remains united; whereas, if not, all the nations comprising Europe will disappear from the front line of global actors. The new world is out there and looking at it in the face will help us strengthen our complex identity.
