The aim of this work is to review the bibliography of scientific articles that involve mental disorders and cerebellar
agenesis with the purpose of verifying if the subjects that show this affection, either total or partial, or simply some
alteration in the volume or structure of the cerebellum, will have a greater probability of presenting mental
disorders such as schizophrenia, autism or addiction. To carry out the bibliographic review, the database used was
Pubmed, a total of 70 articles were consulted, of which only 14 were selected due to their relevance.
The results obtained have allowed to accept the initial hypothesis, so it can be affirmed that cerebellar
abnormalities are involved in mental disorders. The consequences found vary depending on the type of cerebellar
affection or the amount of mass absent, however, it has been possible to attribute that the posterior and lateral
regions of the cerebellum are related to cognition, while the cerebellar vermis alterations have been associated
with affective disorders. The types of affections are very varied, from mood disorders such as depression,
neurocognitive disorders such as autism or dyslexia, to schizophrenia.
In view of the results, it can be concluded that although the cerebellum is traditionally known for its involvement in
motor function, the evidence suggests that it has a role in cognition, mood and motivation. It would be interesting
to have a larger number of studies supporting the investigations that have been counted so far, since the
abnormalities in cortical volume in patients with mental disorders are well documented, but as far as the
cerebellum is concerned, there is not much research . [-]
