Abstract

Through the triptych formed by The Seventh Continent (Der siebente kontinent, 1989), Benny’s Video (Benny’s Video, 1992) and 71 Fragments of a Chronology of Chance (71 Fragmente einer chronologie des zufalls, 1994), Michael Haneke produces a solid discursive unit focused on denouncing audiovisual show. This criticism is presented as a mirror of a way of life characterized by mere social appearance, as well as by the lethargy and alienation of the contemporary individual. Haneke takes this negative view of the society of the show to the extreme thanks to a series of metatextual techniques and enunciative marks, such as fragmentary and choral storytelling, black images, the suggestion of off-screen and the hybridization of visual textures of video and cinema. Our purpose in this text is to highlight this perception through the figurative and symbolic presence of television in the domestic sphere. Reality arises from television show, which in turn is real. According to Haneke, this reciprocal alienation —as Guy Debord similarly maintains— is the essence and foundation of our society. [-]
