The need for academic programs (undergraduate, graduate, or university certification programs) that successfully and completely equip, prepare, and train professional medical interpreters in the United States to perform their jobs competently in the work field.

Abstract

The high level of immigration to the United States is one of the reasons why it is hard to believe that this country has not yet taken steps toward improving the services offered to immigrants from all nations. The American healthcare system needs improvement regarding the provision of basic care for immigrants who do not speak English. The personnel of hospitals, clinics, o r any healthcare facility that assist foreigners cannot successfully help their patients if they do not have the assistance of professional medical interpreters. These professional medical interpreters are vital because they allow effective communication b etween people who do not share a common language. Although the results of many studies have proven the importance of having trained medical interpreters, there is a very limited amount of institutions that offer education in medical interpretation. In this research, four programs that train and prepare medical interpreters, as well as two institutions that test applicants who wish to become a certified medical interpreter, are compared and contrasted in order to determine whether or not these training progr ams successfully and completely prepare medical interpreters for professional practice.

Es difícil entender que en los Estados Unidos, con el gran número de inmigrantes que recibe de todos los rincones del mundo, no se hayan tomado aún medidas para mejorar los servicios públicos básicos que se ofrecen a los inmigrantes. El sistema de salud es tadounidense necesita mejoras en cuanto a la provisión de servicios básicos para inmigrantes que no hablan inglés. El personal médico de hospitales, clínicas o cualquier centro de salud que recibe a pacientes extranjeros no puede brindar sus servicios con garantías de calidad sin la ayuda de intérpretes médicos profesionales. El concurso de estos profesionales es vital ya que permite que personas que no hablan un mismo idioma se puedan comunicar de manera efectiva. A pesar de que los resultados de numerosos estudios de investigación han demostrado la importancia de trabajar en estos entornos con intérpretes cualificados, existen muy pocas instituciones educativas que ofrezcan programas en interpretación médica. En este trabajo se realizará un estudio compara do de cuatro programas académicos de formación y dos programas de certificación profesional de intérpretes médicos, con el propósito de determinar si dichos programas educativos preparan a sus intérpretes médicos para llevar a cabo su trabajo de manera rig urosa y profesional.
