The Spanish Law 22/2011 on Residues and Soil Pollution establishes, among other matters, the need to adopt measures to foster the selective collection of biowaste. Consequently, a number of plans and programmes have been implemented in the country. One of the objectives of the Spanish National Framework Plan on Waste Disposal (2016-2020) by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment is the promotion of measures aimed at fostering the selective collection of biowaste for its composting and anaerobic digestion and increasing the environmental security of the compost produced not only in sectors such as the agriculture or gardening, but also in degraded areas. Concerning domestic waste and municipal solid waste (MSW), Spain has implemented up to six models of selective collection attending to the type of waste that is collected separately. Among them one may find the 5-recycling-bins model: glass, paper-cardboard, metal and plastic packaging, and organic and rest of waste (biowaste). [-]
