This project aimed to create a full artistic videogame that shows what I, like a student from the Degree of Videogames Design and Development, have learnt in this years. Investigating how to create an interactive storybook set on a mystery Celtic ambience. Mostly, joining subjects as “Arte para el videojuego”, “Narrativa Hipermedia” and “Motores de juego”.
The project focused on the artistic part of a videogame. The main objective was obtaining a videogame that has an appealing story and a good visibility. In order to achieve this aim, the 2d design program Krita [1] (an open source program for digital painting) and the Unity 5 engine [2] have been used. Combining their features, the storybook has both a story and a hand painted art style designs. With Unity, this two parts have been fused to create not only a simple book, but a work that is playable. The result is much more dynamic and attractive using trees [3], particles systems[4], lights and image effects[5].
This application is divided principally in two scenes:
The board game scene: The player plays, in a 2D isometric view, in a board game. When the main character moves (with a roulette) and falls into a box, the story scene of this box is opened. Like a book, this board game has pages, in this case boxes. When the player falls, he can see the page associated.
The story scene: A 2.5D view perspective scene. Each scene is vinculated to a box of the board game. It shows a place like a forest or a cave that has characters or objects. The player can interact with them. So that, although the story is linear, there can be several ways to discover it using a game strategy.
This project, following the process that I explain in this document, make possible to get a very good visual result faster than the traditional way. Getting a different effect of life painting using directly the game engine to create it. [-]
