Dialnet, Research Gate y DARE.

Introduction: Within complementary therapies, acupuncture constitutes an option to consider
in the treatment of neuropathic pain, a type of incapacitating and difficult to relieve pain when
pharmacological therapy doesn’t work. These patients tend to suffer a lot and have
psychological distress that worsened their quality of life, therefore the role of nursing is
needed considering that it is a healthcare professional capable to perform acupuncture as a
respectful belief intervention which also regards patients’ personal experiences, looking for an
improvement on their welfare.
Objectives: The main goal is to prove through a literature revision whether acupuncture is an
effective treatment in the management of neuropathic pain as an adjuvant therapy to
pharmacological therapy.
Methods and results: A literature review has been performed in different data bases:
Pubmed, Research Gate, Dialnet and DARE. Of a total amount of 440 studies founded and
after the evidence evaluation, finally 8 articles were recruited and included in the review.
Discussion: After analysing the outcomes from the selected articles, most of them show a
positive influence of acupuncture related to pain and the patients’ quality of life, noticing a
wide variety of acupuncture modalities.
Conclusion: More RCT are required in order to demonstrate that acupuncture is an effective
therapy related to the relief of neuropathic pain. Due to the impact it has on the quality of
life, nursing could be the ideal discipline to perform this therapy considering the patient in an
integral way. [-]
