Deterioro Cognitivo Leve (DCL).

In this study we used brain structural imaging to investigate the differences in 26 active
and 42 passive bilinguals diagnosed with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). The aim of our
investigation was to determine if bilingualism acts as a protective factor for dementia, with
active bilinguals showing a higher level of brain atrophy but the same diagnose and symptoms
as passive bilinguals (or monolinguals). Our findings suggest that active bilinguals with the
same MCI diagnose as passive bilinguals show greater brain atrophy than the latter in specific
brain areas such as the precuneus, Wernicke’s area or the Heschl’s gyrus, without further
differences in neuropsychological tests scores, age or years of schooling. This provides evidence
in line with previous studies suggesting that bilingualism acts as a protective factor for dementia
in early stages of deterioration. [-]
