In order to teach the reading skill, in a Spanish EFL classroom, teachers often use the
texts that appear within textbooks to introduce new vocabulary. However, the number
of professionals that believe in using authentic materials to teach reading is increasing.
What is more: the number of researchers that believe in using literature in the EFL
classroom is increasing too. So, this project aims to show the teaching of the reading
skill by means of literature taking into account three main approaches: the linguistic
model, the cultural model and the personal growth model, approaches that not only are
based on reading itself but also focus on teaching grammar, vocabulary, cultural aspects
of the English culture and personal values. To that end, a teaching implementation has
been carried out in a Spanish secondary school with a novel belonging to the YAL
genre. Thus, the good results obtained after finishing the implementation seem to affirm
that literature is a great vehicle to teach English [-]
