Addiction is a brain disease characterized by drug abuse and drug seeking despite its negative consequences. Previous findings show that the cerebellum is involved in addiction, although historically it has been overlooked in this disease, since it was thought that it had only motor functions. Thus, it is believed that the cerebellum is connected with the corticostriatal-limbic system, which is responsible for addiction, through the thalamus. The present study attempts to observe if a functional relationship exists between these two structures. To this end, changes in the neuronal activity of the thalamus after a dorsal lesion in the posterior cerebellum are studied. Results seem to suggest that the cerebellar lesion makes the animals develop preference toward the stimulus associated with the drug. Moreover, it is concluded that there are changes in the thalamic activity, and these changes are produced in the mediodorsal thalamus. [-]
