The following assignment aims to analyse the common themes between the Irish book: Paddy
Clarke HA HA HA by Roddy Doyle and the story, The Dead, in James Joyce’s book Dubliners.
The prime purpose of this dissertation is to identify how cultural references in common themes
are translated and to analyse possible operation procedures regardless of the publication date of
the works.
We will firstly explore briefly the context of both authors and Irish history in order to
understand Irish attitudes and ideas. Secondly we will analyse common themes found in both
works such as: nationality, religion, violence and childhood, race, sports and culture in order to
understand how cultural references have been translation in the published version [-]
