Advertising is a communication technique that consists in positioning a brand
through its identifiable traits. These traits help build the personality of the brand,
based on the characteristics that are attributed to the company. For this reason,
advertising is a key tool for the survival of a brand in a global market, saturated
and fierce, because it strengthens their differentiation to compete.
Even so, there are some exceptions that catch the eye. This is the case of
Inditex, a company who doesn’t frequently use conventional advertising for any
of their brands but, at the same time, maintain a high and constant level of
sales; Zara, one of their brands, is known and recognized worldwide. It seems
that the tool that they use is a thought out strategy of point of sale marketing.
But is this enough? Experience says not so, so, how does Zara not use
advertising and still stay intact?
This is the main question, the object of analysis for which I decided to
investigate through the world of fashion about Zara, Inditex and Amancio
Ortega, the brain of the whole operation. After an approximation through fashion
sociology and the current models of production and consumption, it will be
followed through with a theory analysis with which I intend to decode the keys of
Inditex’s textile business, from the revolution that their model has provoked in
the world of fashion, as well as the social and economic context in which Zara
has developed itself, until now, with a good health and an unstoppable growth
rate. For this end-of-degree project I will also analyze how this functioning, free
from advertising, is put in place in the Zara’s of Castellón de la Plana. [-]
