En este artículo se reseñan las líneas principales de la historiografía agraria y rural medieval. El artículo analiza el despegue de la agricultura familiar intensiva durante la formación y consolidación de la pólis en la Grecia antigua. Se parte del estado actual de la cuestión para estudiar tres elementos: las formas de acceso a la tierra, las condiciones tecnológicas y las estrategias de labranza. En el examen de cada uno de estos factores y se comprueba el papel fundamental de los labradores autónomos, llegándose a la conclusión de que el carácter relativamente igualitario de las comunidades griegas fue el resultado del protagonismo del campesinado entre los siglos VIII y IV a.C. The article analyses the growth of farmers and the intensive family agriculture during the development and consolidation of the polis in ancient Greece. The initial point is the current state of the subject according to the more significant specialized bibliography, and it ls intended to search for three main factors of the appointed historical situation: the ways of access to the land, technological conditions, and the farming strategies. In the examination of every aspect it is assumed and established the fundamental function of the autonomous cultivators; and the conclusion points out that the conceivably egalitarian character acquired by the Greek communities was the consequence of the peasantry's leading role between the eighth and the fourth centuries B.C [-]
