The main focus of this study is Terrorism and Violent Extremism with a specific focus on Kenya. The current approaches applied to respond and counter the rise of extremism and terroristic attacks have replicated dominant narratives that are proving to be counterproductive and creating a cycle of violence. This research is important as it delves into the hegemonic dogmas that largely shape Kenya’s practices, with the aim of introducing alternative approaches that can contribute positively to the solutions of this problem. Consequently, it has adopted a discursive analysis that has focused on dominant discourses, case study analysis and hermeneutic analysis, which have aided in the comprehension of the Kenyan example. The main conclusion of the thesis is that Terrorism needs to be analyzed from a holistic approach that gives room for multileveled ways of dealing with it. The thesis recommends for a collective bottom-up approach to be used while countering violent extremism. Bringing in a communal responsibility that seeks to undermine terroristic activities and foster social cohesion and resilience. [-]
