Alcohol is a drug of abuse with a major impact on society and which
involves a high social and economic cost. It is responsible for numerous deaths each year
and is linked to the emergence of other diseases. Women typically consume less alcohol but
suffer most from its consequences, indicating that there are differences in gender. The aim
of this study is to identify these differences. To do this, we focus on the differences in the
pharmacokinetics: administration, absorption, distribution, metabolism and elimination. This
review paper focuses mainly on three studies examining gender differences through various
experiments. The results present us that differences exist at all levels of the
pharmacokinetics of alcohol, with women showing the lowest levels of metabolism,
distribution and elimination of alcohol. Anyway, it is necessary to extend the sample to
enhance the significance of the results and focus on the differences from other perspectives,
as might be the pharmacodynamics. [-]
