In contrast to other social groups such as foreigners, thieves, slaves, etc., the case of Roman
women is complex. They are fellow human beings but, at the same time, their social status is
diverse. This situation makes them a heterogeneous group, whose representation, therefore,
calls for a wide variety of stereotypes. Nevertheless, the aim of this paper is to show the
features these crystallized schemas have in common, in order to confirm the precedence of
gender over other categories such as age or social status. The persistent description of female
speech as excessive, hyperbolic and deceitful in Latin texts from different genres and periods
supports this thesis. [-]
