La presencia de las mujeres psicólogas en la historia de la Psicología

Abstract

Este estudio tiene como objetivo averiguar la presencia de las mujeres en los manuales de Historia de la Psicología. Por ello utilizaremos un método de revisión bibliográfica en los cinco libros de historia de la psicología que hemos examinado para averiguar las citas que han recibido las mujeres psicólogas. Además, también, hemos consultado la base de datos Social Science Citation Index (SSCI 1956-2015) para analizar el impacto de las mujeres psicólogas en el campo de la psicología. Hemos intentado conocer la influencia de las pioneras psicólogas en el desarrollo de la disciplina y recuperar la obra de estas mujeres psicólogas para la historia de la psicología. Las mujeres psicólogas que más citas han recibido en los manuales de historia de la psicología son: Mary Calkins, Karen Honey, Rosalie Rayner, Margaret Washburn, Laurel Furumoto, Mary Covers Jones, Christine Ladd-Franklin y Elisabeth Scarborough. Algunas de sus contribuciones fueron bastantes relevantes, por ejemplo Mary Calkins fue presidenta de la APA en 1905 al igual que Margaret Washburn en 1921. Éstas dos mujeres psicólogas y Christine Ladd-Franklin fueron etiquetadas como psicólogas “eminentes” en el directorio de Cattell. Los resultados muestran que el número de citas a mujeres es mucho menor que las citas a hombres y no porque éstas no hayan sido importantes en el desarrollo de esta disciplina sino porque durante muchos años las mujeres han sido invisibilizadas por grandes hombres o teorías. Finalmente, el estudio intenta llamar la atención sobre la necesidad de integrar a las mujeres en la historia de la disciplina y proporcionar una adecuada comprensión del pasado de la psicología.

This study aims to determine the presence of women in the history of Psychology manuals. Therefore we will use a method of literature review in five books that we have examined of the history of psychology to find citations that have received the women psychologists. In addition, we have also consulted Social Science Citation Index (SSCI 1956-2015) database to analyze the impact of women psychologists in the field of psychology. We have tried to determine the influence of the pioneering psychologists developing the discipline and recover the work of these women psychologists for the history of psychology. Women psychologists that more citations have been in the history of Psychology manuals are: Mary Calkins, Karen Honey, Rosalie Rayner, Margaret Washburn, Laurel Furumoto, Mary Covers Jones, Christine Ladd-Franklin and Elisabeth Scarborough. Some of his contributions were enough relevant, e.g. Mary Calkins was President of the APA in 1905 as Margaret Washburn in 1921. These two women psychologists and Christine Ladd-Franklin were tagged as "eminent" psychologists in directory of Cattell. The results show that the number of citations to women is much lower than citations to men and not because they have not been important in the development of this discipline but because for many years women have been hidden by great men or theories. Finally, the study tries to draw attention to the need to integrate women in the history of the discipline and to provide a proper understanding of Psychology's past.
