The present thesis revolves around Olaudah Equiano's literary work, T he Interesting
Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, or Gustavus Vassa the African. Written by
Himself . This essay is intended to illustrate the author's hybrid identity as a result of his
capture from his African homeland and its depiction in the book. Initially, the literary form of
slave narrative will be meticulously defined. Therefore, various definitions of slave narrative
will be given and its main features will be described. Further, the context of the slaves'
situation in the 18 th century will be explained. The perception and the black race as being
inferior to the white culture will be discussed upon. Additionally, the influence of the
Christian religion on enslavement practices and its justification will be clarified. Moreover,
Equiano experiences an evolution as far as education and religion are concerned. Thus, when
he becomes a captive, he is forced to renounce his African religious bonds, while his
comprehension of the new context was limited. Nonetheless, he embraces the Anglican
religion once he buys his own emancipation and becomes a liberated man. Finally, the
particularities that contribute to his hybrid identity will be adduced and described. Hence,
elements such as the usage of two names, the distinction between whiteness and blackness
and the contrast between his status of Englishman and African slave will examined. [-]
