The objective of this paper is to analyze how the presence of institutional directors,
independent directors and women directors affects the total board compensation of Spanish
listed firms. We hypothesize that board compensation is positively affected by the
percentage of institutional directors, independent directors and women on the board seats.
The results, based on a sample of 98 listed firms from the Madrid Stock Exchange, report
that independent directors do not have effect on the total board compensation, while
institutional directors and women directors affect positively the board compensation. [-]
