In today’s society, technology has become center stage and social media has become
progressively essential in our daily lives. Social media has not only become a form of
communication for personal use, but a key form of doing business. “According to the Internet
World Stats (2009), in late 2009, there were about 1.7 billion Internet users in the world,
which accounts for about 25% of the total world population” (Ihlen et al., 2011: 358). Now
more than ever, companies of all sizes are diving into the realm of social media as it is a new
way for organizations to heavily promote themselves and connect with current and potential
clients, and consumers. Social media is not only affecting external relationships, but it is also
becoming a means of interaction and communication within companies.
In recent years, the evolution of social media has completely transformed the way the world
communicates, from the delivery of news to the way companies do their marketing. Social
media channels offer limitless possibilities of sharing information and allow instant responses
and reactions. It is now difficult to conceive a society where these forms of communication
were non-existent and where people would only rely on traditional methods of interaction. It
is possible to produce and release as much or as little content to millions of people in seconds
and this alone gives people and companies an incredible ability to expose themselves to the
world. The growing popularity of social media is now becoming a question of survival for
both individuals and businesses.
Although the internet can be a wonderful outlet for a company’s external promotion, it is also
a great responsibility. Companies should ensure they are being deliberate with the content
they are sharing and what needs to be kept confidential. Embracing social media can be a
difficult step to take, especially for smaller companies. However, if it is approached with
clear objectives, a purpose and in a way that can improve the image of the company, then it
can be greatly beneficial.
Pitarch Logística, S.A. is a family owned company that was founded in the 1950s by D.
Victorino Pitarch Belles in Castellón. It initially began as a moving company in the region of
Castellón and later developed into both a national and international transportation company to
meet the needs of companies in the area who were looking to import and export their goods.
Over time, the business evolved as a result of demand and adapted to the best of their ability,
to what is now our technological world. The company gained extensive experience in the
transportation industry and proved themselves as a leader in the logistics and transportation. area. They cater to both their national and international clients with their fleet of nearly 100
vehicles and have become experts in both full load and groupage transportation. The Escrig
siblings have taken over ownership of the company and remain consistent in promoting the
company’s philosophy which is dedicated to providing quality and personalized services.
In a small company such as Pitarch Logística, S.A. it proves more challenging to promote
themselves outside the region of Castellón, due to limited resources, manpower and poor use
of both their external and internal communication. In order for the company to remain
competitive and stay at the top tier in their sector, they must begin to implement social
networks for the overall improvement of their company. “Social media isn’t a fad; it’s a
fundamental shift in the way we communicate” (Qualman, 2013: 208). Time and concern for
the use of social media is another big factor. There should be a push and sense of urgency to
take advantage of the online resources that are available. Many companies overlook these
tools and miss out on opportunities to improve the image of their business. While taking part
in an internship at Pitarch Logística S.A., it quickly became apparent the areas which could
use improvement. [-]
