The growing interest in semiconductor oxide thin films within materials science and engineering due to their unique physical, chemical, and electrical properties. These films, with thicknesses ranging from nanometers to micrometers, are deposited on various substrates through techniques like sputtering and chemical vapor deposition. Extensive research is focused on their applications in microelectronics, optics, energy storage, sensing, and catalysis. The main focus of the present thesis is the synthesis of transparent thin films on glass surfaces to introduce new properties such as degradation of contaminants or bacterial agents. The goal is to address emerging social needs for specialized materials that contribute to a healthier future. The thesis specifically explores the synthesis, characterization, and application of titanium and zinc oxides in thin film form, functionalized with nanoparticles for improved antimicrobial and photocatalytic properties. The study culminates in four chapters, covering introductory concepts, objectives, synthesis and characterization of ZnO-based composites, generation of transparent thin layers with photocatalytic and bactericidal activity, and concluding with overarching findings from the entire research endeavor. The results have been published in high-impact scientific journals in the field. [-]
