Dos miradas a China en el tránsito de la dinastía Ming a la Qing: las visiones de Sabiano Manrique de Lara y Juan de Palafox y Mendoza

Abstract

En este artículo nos adentraremos en algunas de las distintas visiones que se tenían desde la monarquía hispánica del imperio chino a mediados del siglo XVII. Para ello nos centraremos en la apreciación que tuvieron del tránsito de la dinastía Ming a la Qing dos personajes vinculados al continente asiático: el gobernador de Filipinas Sabiano Manrique de Lara y el arzobispo-virrey de Nueva España Juan de Palafox y Mendoza. A través de ellos nos adentraremos en dos visiones diferenciadas y hasta cierto punto contrapuestas sobre China, y como sus propias experiencias y preparación condicionaron y adaptaron en gran medida sus apreciaciones sobre este país.

In this article we will bring into focus and perspective the different views that have been held by the Hispanic monarchy about the Chinese empire in the middle of the of XVII century. So we will focus on the perception they had about the transition from The Ming Dinasty to The Qing one. Two characters were linked to the Asiatic continent: the governor of Philipines, Sabriano Manrique de Lara and the archbishop of Nueva España, Juan Palafox y Mendoza. They will let us get into two different and to a certain point opposing views about this issue, and know about how their own experience and preparation influenced and adapted their perceptions about this country.
