dc.description.abstract | Satisfied our initial purpose of supervising the birth of this reflection undertaken by two (or in the future maybe more – who knows?) pairs of hands with the aid of (but not absorbed by) the films currently being shown and linked to (but not subjugated by) the day-to-day events that take place around this world we live in, this intermittent appearance allows us room, this time, to address issues that affect us directly as citizens (are there any that do not?). The thing is that over this period cinema has continued to be but a succession of "more of the same", somewhere between the magnification of the spectacular, the insipidness of the irrelevant, together with the marginality of the more radical standpoints. Meanwhile, we have had elections in our country that have highlighted the uppermost ceiling of the Partido Popular (PP, the outright winner although with less than 400,000 votes more than its previous highest figures, despite the absolute majority obtained). At the same time, we have the disastrous performance by the Partido Socialista Obrero Español (PSOE, with the insidious gift of digits in its acronym, two of which are too big for it, which reaped results that were far poorer than those of its worst-case forecasts, even though it must be said that it did everything in its power to deserve such results). Then we have the unquestionable advance of Izquierda Unida (IU, a coalition that needs an irrational number of votes to assure itself each seat it wins) and the Catalan and Basque nationalists, together with other also notable results, such as those achieved by Unión Progresiva y Democracia (UPyD, the splinter party led by Rosa Díez that broke off from the PSOE). It is in this moment that the usual phrases that are always wielded to sweeten the most extravagant voting now come to mind: things like “the people are always right”, “ballot boxes don’t lie", and so forth.
