dc.description.abstract | Most of the Virtual Reality (VR) applications for cancer patients have focused on reducing discomfort, and there are fewer applications aimed at promoting emotional well‑ being of hospitalized patients. In this paper the characteristics of a VR system, oriented to the induction of positive emotions in hospitalized patients with cancer, are presented. This system is being implemented in a Phase II trial (in one center), in order to assess its efficacy and efficiency. Material and method: Virtual environments designed to induce joy and relax in adult oncology inpatients are described. The VR intervention consists of 4 sessions: two of them oriented to joy induction and two focused on relaxation induction. Each session last approximately half an hour and is administered in the patients` rooms. characteristics of Phase II trial are also described. Results: VR system allows patients to navigate through virtual environments that present several emotional induction procedures (narratives, music, images, self statements, etc.). Preliminarily, Phase II trial data suggest greater emotional benefits in the group of patients who received VR intervention, compared to those who did not received VR sessions. Conclusions: considering that there are few VR applications focused on the promotion of emotional wellbeing in oncology patients, it is important to implement and assess systems like the one described here. Potential benefits of this type of intervention in hospital setting are discussed. | ca_CA |
| ca_CA |
