In the style of the Russian artists who inaugurated
the more formally radical avant-garde and from the
time when his work became visible in the 1960s, José
María Yturralde has made use of an interesting series
of resources that make his work fully recognizable.
Although today’s Yturralde, with all the subtleness of
Zen, is not the same geometrically Baroque Yturralde of
some of the Impossible Figures, there is still a certain
je ne sais quoi among his different series which serves
to connect them. This is the grace Montesquieu spoke
of, which characterized the qualities of something or
someone and which entrances us without fail. Against
all odds, geometric resources have renewed themselves
throughout the twentieth century and continue to
be updated in the twenty-first. Supported mainly by
optical, kinetic and cybernetic experiences as well as by
cinematographic and videographic ones, they continue to
renew themselves and still be seen in the black square
against the white background. [-]
