In 1995, Leo van Lier reminded us that it is necessary to help students to improve themselves and to improve the world they live in by means of a critical and expressive use of language both in thinking and in action. Likewise, in 1997 Pablo del Río also underlined the fact that the basic problem concerning what world and what life model are constructed by our culture (which covers the school curriculum, the mass media and the everyday culture) has always been left out of the great official issues of working in education and in the teaching of reading and writing. The same author also stresses the idea that life and humanity should not be considered from abstraction without culture but instead based on texts and images that are offered to students by the mass media, everyday culture and formal education. In this sense, then, literacy is above all learning to read the world using its instrumental keys. [-]
